Both foreign and home-grown brands remain aggressive in offering entry-level products in order to appeal to middle-income buyers whilst fortifying their high-end brands with better specifications to differentiate themselves from competition.
Samsung Electronics Philippines maintains its position as the largest player in Philippine mobile phone. The company sold 4.8 million mobile phones in 2013, accounting for 25% of total volume. Samsung’s wide range of entry-level, mid-range and high-end devices enable it to be popular amongst all income segments in the country. Meanwhile, home-grown Cosmic Technologies, manufacturer of more affordable Cherry feature and smartphones, secured the second spot with an 18% volume share. It should be noted that the company has been very aggressive in launching smartphones with upgraded specifications in order to appeal to more middle-income buyers.
Mobile phones will continue to grow over the forecast, albeit at a slower pace compared to what was recorded over the 2008-2013 review period. As market penetration has significantly improved in recent years, it is anticipated that mobile phones will be entering a period of maturity where growth rates will be relatively stable. The volume CAGR from 2013-2018 is expected to be 5%, half that of the 10% CAGR seen over the review period.
